On September 17, 1998, after perservering for many years, the Marquette Range Iron Mining Heritage Theme Park, Inc. (MRIMHTP) took possession of the Historical Cliffs Shaft Mine. Today, regrowth of forest has occurred. The hills are composed of iron-rich rocks like diorite, and other "iron formations". This structure is the shafthouse of the Cliffs-Shaft mine, in Ishpeming, one of only two iron mines in the city proper. By the turn of the century mines in Ishpeming were producing more than 2 million tons of ore per year.

1854 – The Cleveland Iron Mining Co. first began mining at what is known as the Saw Mill Pit, and later at the School House Pit, and that year shipped 3000 tons of ore. This date – 1854 – which marked the beginning of mining here, has been agreed to be the beginning of Ishpeming.

The mine property and the surface relics of the abandoned iron mining activities was owned by the by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company. They donated it in 1998 to the Marquette Range Iron Mining Heritage Theme Park, Inc.
